Sailing Returns to Naples

For the first time in its century-long history, the America's Cup comes to Italy. The Gulf of Naples will host the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup in 2027, with the races taking place in the waters between Castel dell'Ovo and Posillipo, in the shadow of the majestic Vesuvius. An extraordinary event that will bring the world's best crews to compete in the heart of the Mediterranean.

The Event

The Gulf of Naples as the Arena

The races will take place in the waters between Castel dell'Ovo and the Posillipo hill, offering a setting unique in the world. The team bases will be located in Bagnoli, transforming the entire coastal area of Naples into an international stage for sailing.

The Gulf of Naples offers ideal conditions for the AC75 races: between May and June the thermal breeze settles between 12:30 and 14:30, reaching speeds of 10-15 knots, perfect for these flying boats.

The event unfolds across several phases, with preliminary races and a final phase culminating in the Match for the Cup.

  • 2026: Up to 3 preliminary races in the AC40 class

  • 2027 (pre-event): Preliminary race in Naples in AC75

  • 2027: Louis Vuitton Cup - Challenger Selection

  • 10-18 July 2027: Final America's Cup Match

The Protagonists
The Competing Teams

Five teams from around the world will compete in the Gulf of Naples. The AC75s, fully battery-powered flying boats with crews of 6, promise a breathtaking spectacle.

Emirates Team New Zealand

The Defender, reigning champion. The New Zealand team will defend the Cup in Neapolitan waters after their victory in Barcelona in 2024.

Luna Rossa (ITA)

The Italian team will be the home crowd's favourite. With Peter Burling at the helm, it aims to bring the Cup to Italy for the first time.

GB1 - Athena Racing (GBR)

The British Challenger of Record, led by Ben Ainslie as Team Principal with Dylan Fletcher at the helm.

Tudor Team Alinghi (SUI)

The Swiss team, with a long tradition in the America's Cup, returns to compete to reclaim the oldest trophy in sport.

K-Challenge (FRA)

The French team brings France back into the competition, adding further European appeal to this historic edition.

Format

How the Race Works

The Louis Vuitton Cup will select the challenger who will face Emirates Team New Zealand in the final Match. The format includes:

  • Group stage: match races and fleet races with all the Challengers

  • Semifinals: the top 4 Challengers, first to 5 wins

  • Louis Vuitton Cup Final: first to 7 wins

  • America's Cup Match: the winner challenges the Defender

Technology

The AC75s: Flying Boats

The AC75s represent the pinnacle of world sailing technology. These 75-foot monohulls (about 23 metres) are equipped with foils that lift them out of the water, allowing them to "fly" over the surface at speeds exceeding 50 knots.

The major innovation of the 38th edition is the fully electric battery power: the muscle power of the grinders has been replaced by technology. The crew is made up of 6 people, including at least one member under 25 and one woman, reflecting the commitment to inclusion in the sport.
